Collections of Cornelia Marguerite Bramine Caudri

Bramine Caudri (1904-1991) was a well known specialist on the larger foraminifera from the Dutch East Indies, Indonesia, (1934 to 1939) and especially from the Caribbean area. In 1934 she completed her PhD thesis on Tertiary Deposits of Soemba (Proefschrift Universiteit Leiden, NL). In the latter area she had long associations with the oil industry, e.g. Trinidad Leaseholds Ltd under the leadership of Hans G. Kugler (1939-1945), the Tropical Oil Co. in Bogota (1945-1949), Columbia, and with Texaco in Caracas, Venezuela (1949-1961). Especially for the Soldado Rock studies refer also to specimens deposited in the stratigraphic collection of H.G. Kugler and the relevant publications and maps. Especially see specimens collected by Bramine Caudri in Trinidad, that now are incorporated in the micropaleontological collection of Hans Kugler, under the "collection Van der Vlerk" and to Van der Geyn, W.A.E. and Van der Vlerk, J.M. (1935). Many locations and formation names, from where C.M.B. Caudri has collected her samples, are also discussed and published in Bolli, Beckmann and Saunders (1994).

Pierre A. Soder wrote a memorial in 1991, and the major publications of C.M.B. Caudri are listed in the literature references.

Overview of the collections from C.M.B.Caudri, in chronological order

1.) Reference collection to the the publication The larger foraminifera of Trinidad (West Indies), revised, updated and edited by H.M. Bolli and J.P. Beckmann in 1996).

Standort

Bramine Caudri (1904-1991) completed her manuscript on the larger foraminifera of Trinidad consisting of 501 typewritten pages, 30 plates and 7 figures and range charts in 1985. Together with the illustrated specimens, photographs and lists the manuscript was deposited for eventual publication at the Natural History Museum in Basel. Because of its size, in particular its systematic part, it proved difficult to fund its publication. It was therefore decided to condense its size without however loosing pertinent data including illustrations and charts. Basically the reduction affected the systematic part. Reductions concerned taxa that were already treated by Caudri in her 1975 Soldado Rock publication. For additional information see also the study of Vaughan and Cole (1941) and the collection to Vaughan and Cole (1941). The original unabbreviated copy of Caudri's manuscript is deposited, together with the study material, that refer to it, in the collections of the Museum of Natural History, Basel, where it is available for consultation. TSL 180.

7.) Colln C.M.B. Caudri (1938): Standard genus ("type") collection of smaller foraminifera from Indonesia.

Standort

This is a systematic collection of mainly smaller benthic foraminifera from Indonesia. It comprises four trays with 84 genus slides of smaller foraminifera, including hand-written identification lists prepared by C.M.B. Caudri in 1938. The material was prepared from N.P.P.U. materials. This is C.M.B. Caudri's duplicate collection of the one deposited in Batavia, Den Hague, The Netherlands. The collection contains the major genera of smaller benthic foraminifera.

8.) Colln. C.M.B. Caudri (1972a): Report on a collection of rock samples from Ecuador.

Standort

This collection contains the study material to an unpublished report of C.M.B. Caudri on the larger foraminifera in a collection of thin sections from Ecuador, that she received from Jacques Sigal in 1971. The goal was to establish the controversial ages in limestones south of Jipijapa and to discuss the relationships to the Daule or the Charapoté formation and the Javita limestone in that area. The Middle Eocene Javita limestone is the equivalent to the Socorro formation further south.

The materials includes four trays with thin sections and letters or identification lists, and a folder with additional information:

9.) Colln. C.M.B. Caudri (1972b). The Larger foraminifera of the Scotland District of Barbados.

Standort

This is the reference collection to C.M.B. Caudri (1972b). The larger foraminifera of the Scotland District of Barbados. It consists of one tray with 25 slides and thin sections referenced in the article. A copy of a reprint is included.

Additional materials was collected by Caudri in 1941 during a field excursion together with Alfred Senn in Barbados. This material is included here for reference and comprises four sample bags containing unwashed and soaked radiolaria marls from the Oceanic Formation at Bissex Hill, a piece from Alfred Senn's sample S 587 from the lower Eocene of Walker's member [Caudri's note: "very important! See Senn (1940, page 1553, line 10); neither Vaughan (1945) nor Cizancourt (1948) mention this fauna in their publications"], and a piece of unprocessed rock from A. Senn's sample S 34c from the type locality of the Murphys beds (middle Eocene). Slides contain in part T.L.L. catalogue numbers.

For more information on Barbadian geology and micropaleontology see also the collections of Alfred Senn and the related study by Beckmann (1953), the collections of De Cizancourt (1948a), and the collections from J.B. Saunders.

10.) Private collections of C.M.B. Caudri.
(Includes materials from Antigua, Bonaire, California, Columbia (colln. Haanstra, Shell), Cuba (material of Palmer and Grimsdale), Curacao, Egypt, France, Honduras, Indonesia (Sumatra and Borneo), Jamaica, Peru (collns Stone, colln. Westermann, 1946), Puerto Rico, South Limburg, St. Maarten, Texas, and Venezuela).

Standort

The material in this collection was left over after checking the materials for curating the above mentioned collections and related publications. It is possible, that other studies from C.M.B. Caudri (for example private reports), that eventually will be found in the future, is related to this material, and so it is kept for reference in the museum.

The collection comprises 6 cardboard boxes A to F with micropaleontological slides and thin sections, mainly of larger foraminifera. No sample lists are given with this material, but slides hold field numbers or company collection numbers and may eventually be identified through company reports from those areas.
