Curator's comment:
Manfred Reichel was professionally located at the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the University of Basel, where he had his working place and his study- and teaching collections. His type- and reference collections to published studies were deposited at the Natural History Museum in Basel and are identifiable as such as separate units in the museum's micropaleontological collections.
During his lifetime and especially after his passing away Manfred Reichel's study and research material were heavily studied, modified, sub-collected, re-organised and therefore "metamorphosed" by his student and later successor, Lukas Hottinger. Hottinger integrated in his own study collections numerous specimens and sub-collections of Manfred Reichel, especially during the earlier career of Hottinger. Later, and with time, Hottinger's study collections were transferred to the museum too and became part of the micropaleontological collections at the NHM. An important consequence is, that the original study collections of Manfred Reichel does no longer exist in form of a separate collection unit. Instead, many early parts of the study and research collections of Lukas Hottinger must simultaneously be considered as those of his mentor and teacher Manfred Reichel.
