Collection of picked and determined benthic and planktic foraminifera
from the section of Cretaceous Scaglia and Flysch formations exposed
along Breggia River in southern Switzerland. The collection includes
the holotypes illustrated in Gandolfi's PhD thesis (type collection),
a vast collection of picked specimens in fema cells, and thin
sections. A copy of the publication is deposited with the material.
- New specimens from the Gandolfi (1942) collection were also
described by Manfred Reichel, see collection Reichel, M. (1949a)., and
the sub-collection
of original microfossil specimens within the collection of structural
foraminiferal models of Manfred Reichel.

- Note [21 August 2015]:
- Study material from the Gandolfi collection was also investigated
in the later dissertation by Jakob Schweighauser (1953) and is
now deposited in the study collection ("Breggia") of
J. Schweighauser. This material contains small amounts of washed
residues and few unprocessed chips of sediment, that were originally
collected by Gandolfi or given to him by colleagues (for example
L. Vonderschmitt, see the foreword in Gandolfi, 1942). Samples
are labelled with R.G. (from Rolando Gandolfi) and bear numbers
illustrated in the stratigraphic column illustrated in Tavola
1 of Gandolfi (1942). See the study collection of J. Schweighauser.
- Holotypes in the type collection (in alphabetical order):
- Anomalina breggiensis Gandolfi (1942)

(1942)
- Anomalina roberti Gandolfi (1942)
- Cibicides reicheli Gandolfi (1942)
- Conorbina brotzeni Gandolfi (1942)
- Cristellaria (Lenticulina) vonderschmitti Gandolfi
(1942)
- Gaudryinella mendrisiensis Gandolfi (1942)

- Note #1:
-
- According to Caron, M. (personal communication 20.6.2006)
there is a mis-identification of specimens between the holotype
and a topotype of Globotruncana appenninica Renz. The
slide in the Gandolfi collection, which holds Globotruncana
appenninica Renz s.str. (Breggia, strato 55), bears a pencil-writing
"holotype" of H.P. Luterbacher. However, the
slide contains two specimens: One is identifiable as the specimen
illustrated in Luterbacher and Premoli Silva (1962), on plate
XIX, fig. 3a-c, which is a topotype (see figure below). The other
is a broken specimen (is this perhaps the holotype ?). The holotype
as illustrated in Gandolfi (1942), pl. II, fig. 5a-d (see below),
is, however, not known.

- Note #2:
- In 2010/2011 G. ticinensis and G. renzi from
the R. Gandoldi collection were re-investigated by Brian T. Huber
(Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., U.S.A.), who isolated
Globotruncana ticinensis metatypes from the specimens
from sample Br. 29 and a Globotruncana renzi Gandolfi
metatype from the specimens in the sample from Balerna.

- Note #3:
- There is additional material from the Breggia section that
was re-collected by H.P. Luterbacher and Michèle Caron:

collns H.P. Luterbacher: Topotypes from various locations,
mostly Europe.
