1.) Type collections

Type- and reference collection to Kapellos, Ch. (1973). Biostratigraphie des Gurnigelflysches mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Nummuliten und des Nannoplanktons, unter Einbeziehung des paläogenen Nannoplanktons der Krim (UDSSR). Collection of thin sections, orientated nummulite sections, mounted nummulites on slides, smear slide preparations (Crimean area, USSR, section Höllbach-Schwyberg, and section Seligraben, Switzerland), diapositive slides from nannofossils. There is also a copy of the diploma thesis of Kapellos (1969).


Slide boxes containing mounted nummulites on slides from sections Höllbach (i.e. Hö7-Hö8a; Hö8a-Hö10; Hö10-Hö16; Hö16-Hö18; Hö18-Hö20; Hö20-Hö30), Aettenberg & Muscheren, section Rotenbach (i. R17-R25; R25-R35); outcrops Le Bigite, Falli, Seligraben and above Schwarzsee.

There is additional study materials (no reference material) comprising isolated nummulites from Wildflysch (Aufschluss Chloster), sectioned rocks and thin-sections of Wildflysch-Gurnigelflysch from the Seeligraben section and other places.

Note also, that there is also unprocessed sediments to this study in the raw material collection.

Collection of hypotypes and holotypes to the specimens illustrated and described in Kapellos, Ch. and Schaub, H. (1973). Zur Korrelation von Biozonierungen mit Grossforaminiferen und Nannoplankton im Paläogen der Pyrenäen. Eclogae geol. Helv. 66(3):687-737.

This is the nannoplankton collection to the publication, with slides from sections of Campo, Tremp, and Perarrua.

The nummulite specimens are integrated in the systematic collection of Tethyan assilina and nummulites collection of Schaub, H. (1981). Schaub samples (field numbers SCH 54207 through SCH 72008) include materials from classical localities such as l'Aude, the Pyreneans, from Gan, Jeangazé, Malaou, Gas, Donzacq, Tremp, Campo, and other places; for detailed maps and descriptions of sections see also the studies of Herb, R. and Schaub, H. (1963), Hottinger, L., Lehmannn,, R., and Schaub, H. (1964), Schaub, H., (1966) and Kapellos, Ch. and Schaub, H. (1975). Numbers indicated in the latter publication (figures 7 and 8) are the field numbers of Ch. Kapellos and are identical to those published in their study from 1973.

To the sections of Campo, Tremp, and various other areas (Aragon, Fabas, Gan, Graus, Coustouge) unprocessed bulk sediments are held with the raw material collection.

2.) Reference collections to publications

Reference collection to Kapellos, Ch. (1974). Ueber das Nannoplankton im Alttertiär des Profils von Zumaya-Guetaria (Provinz Guipuzcoa, Nordspanien). Eclogae geol. Helv. 67(2):435-444. TSL 204.

Collection of zonal nannoplankton smearslides of the described Paleogene sections.

Alongside to this smearslide collection there is a deposit of nannoplankton samples from the original collection to the publication of Hillebrandt, A. von (1965), to which Kapellos (1974) gives refererence (labelled as H.4002 through H.4059). These materials include bulk sediments and nannoplankton suspensions, and two topographic maps from N Spain (ex Jurakeller, cabinet 65/24).

Furthermore, the collection includes the raw nannoplankton samples and nannoplankton-supensions in glass vials to the Zumaya-Guetaria section published by Kapellos (1974). These cover the following sample numbers (samples CK 189 through CK 305):


In addition, there is another collection of bulk nannoplankton samples, suspensions, and smearslides from the Cretaceous Flysch section between Deva and Zumaya, which has been published by Herm, D. (1963), and to which Kapellos (1974) gives reference, too (ex Jurakeller, cabinet 65/25).

3.) Study collections

Bohrung Cuise-La-Motte (Pomerol, 1974)
Cuise-la-Motte is the type locality for the Cuisian stage. This is a collection of unprocessed raw sediments from a drill site at Cuise-la-Motte (Oise, France), with sample levels from 6.0 m through 146.30 m (NMB sample numbers 14891 through 15038).
A xerox copy of the drilling log is deposited with the collection. The material was donated by Ch. Kapellos in 1975.

Nannoplankton collection of Ch. Kapellos
Large collection of raw sediment samples, nannoplankton-suspensions, and smearslides from various Tehthyan (NW-Spain, SW-France, Italy, Switzerland, Crete, Turkey) and extra-European (Caribbean) provenances (see comments below). This set of samples does in most cases not appear in the publications of Kapellos listed above but was collected to develop an Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene Tethyan nannofossil zonation. However, many of the below listed sections and localities are described in publications of Hans Schaub and of Lucas Hottinger about Thethyan Paleogene biostratigraphy and correlations.
