Back to overview of collections from Hans Schaub
Type- and reference collection to the monograph of Schaub, H. (1981). Nummulites et Assilines de la Téthys paléogène. Taxinomie, phylogénèse et biostratigraphie. Schweizerische Paläontologische Abhandlungen, vol. 104:1-236, 18 plates, vol. 105 (Atlas I), plates 1-48, vol. 106 (Atlas II), plates 49-97.
This is a vast - and one of the finest - collections curated at the NHM holding preparations of thousands of nummulites and assilines, polished preparations, rock samples and photographic enlargements (paper prints) to each illustrated specimen from all over the Tethyan realm.
The Schaub (1981) collection is a synthesis by Hans Schaub about the taxonomy, evolution and stratigraphy of paleogene nummulites and assilines, and incorporates the primary types and other materials described by Schaub and his co-workers in earlier publications. The collection is internally organized and physically arranged following the phylogenetic series illustrated in Figures 24, 25, and 26 given in volume 104 of the monograph. This evolutionary (and so stratigraphic) key is followed by a regional key, along which it is possible to locate a particular specimen, which is published in the literature.
Example 1: The holotype of Nummulites praelorioli, which was first described in Herb, R. and Schaub, H. (1963), is deposited together with other specimens of N. praelorioli from the type locality in Sorde (Landes, France) in the first of four drawers holding specimens of this nummulite species (K3/A9/3/102).
Example 2: The holotype of Nummulites campesinus Schaub (1966), which has been described from the Campo section, and according to the lineage scheme in Schaub (1981), is deposited in the first drawer holding N. campesinus specimens, e.g. in K3/A9/1/24.
Every specimen bears the field number of Schaub, which is runnung until a five digits long string, and by a C-number, which is the internal catalogue number of the Natural History Museum in Basel. For every specimen there is also a photographic print. The film negatives to these micrographs are deposited in the archive of Hans Schaub.
See also Supplementary information to the collection Schaub, H. (1981) for a correlation of NMB C-numbers to field numbers of Hans Schaub. See also Schaub, H. (1967) for nummulites and assilines from Tremp (Spain).
Archive to Schaub, H. (1981): Original hand-written documentations, including diagnoses, notes, drawings, spiral drawings, spiral diagrams, and photographic prints of nummulites, all prepared by Hans Schaub for this publication are archived next to the collection. Standort Archive Schaub, H. (1981).
