Collections of Edward Robinson

On the Geology of Jamaica:
A summary of Jamaican geology is given in Robinson, E. (1994). Jamaica. Chapter 6 in Donovan, S.K. and Jackson, T.A. (eds.), 1994. Caribbean Geology. An Introduction. Published by The University of the West Indies Publisher's Association (UWIPA), P.O. Box 42, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica W.I. ISBN 976-41-0033-3. Standort: A xerox copy of the article is deposited with the collection. Entire volume is deposited in hand library Weisser Bär / reprints of L. Hottinger / Caribbean geology.

Type collection to Robinson, E. (1974). Some larger foraminifera from the Eocene limestone at Red Gal Ring, Jamaica. Verhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Basel, 84(1):281-291.

A collection of thin sections from the Eocene part of the Red Gal Ring section and Stony Hill District, St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica. A xerox copy of the paper is included with the collection.

Samples refer to E. Robinson's field numbers ER 278, ER 282, ER 288, ER 299, ER 324, ER 330, ER 335, ER 338, ER 349, ER 356, ER 363, ER 364, and ER 367 from the Somerset and Claremont formations.

Samples from the Buff Bay section and other areas (e.g. Langley section and Rio Sambre section) in Jamaica, collected by E. Robinson:
Washed residues), that were collected by E. Robinson (ER field numbers) in Jamaica:

Set 1 of samples (21 samples, several size fractions), including the following numbers:
ER 449, ER929, ER981, ER987, ER988, ER989, ER990, ER991, ER992, ER993,
ER994, ER995, ER996, ER997, ER998, ER 999, ER1000, ER1001, ER1002,
ER1003, ER1145.

It is not clear whether these samples belong to the "39 ? washed residues representative of the Coastal Group in eastern Jamaica, including cuts of Blows (1969) holotype and paratype zone samples located in Jamaica" or whether they are in part "cuts of residues from 10 samples collected stratigraphically through the type section of the Langley formation (Richmond) group, late early Eocene" mentioned by H.M. Bolli in an attached sheet.

Some sample numbers could be identified to be from the Langley section and the Rio Sambre section in Jamaica, as mentioned in another correspondence of Hans M. Bolli with Ted Robinson and dated from November 1997 (correspondence enlosed with the collection). The same holds true for the raw materials mentioned listed further below and that is currently stored in the Spengler Park deposit in Münchenstein.

Publications from Ted Robinson about Paleogene larger foraminifera mentioning some of the above or close ER field sample numbers include the following studies (printed copies of papers are alongside the collection):

Robinson, E. and Wright, R.M. (1993). Jamaican Paleogene larger foraminifera. Geological Society of America Memoir 182, pp. 283-345. Bulk material of sample ER1366 described in this article is deposited alongside the study collection of Christos Kapellos (materials from Jamaica).

Robinson, E. and Mitchell, S.F. (1999). Upper Cretaceous to Oligocene stratigraphy in Jamaica. A window on the Nicaragua Rise. Contributions to Geology UWI Mona #4, pp. 1-47 (i.e. see ER sample numbers from sections Stop 3 Langley Member and Stop 4. Richmond and Fonthill Formations). Standort Literature.

Set 2 of samples (various size fractions, Buff Bay section, representative of the upper part of the Montpelier Formation, Middle Miocene, zone N12 and lower N13), including a cut of Blow's (1969) holotype N12/N13 zone sample, and with the following numbers:

146/20
146/21 Buff Bay, labelled wit "Gt. robusta" x
146/22 Buff Bay section
ER 146/23
146/24 Buff Bay,
ER 146/25 Buff Bay,
ER 146/26 Buff Bay,
ER 146/27 Buff Bay,
146/29 Buff Bay.

These samples are referenced to in Figures 28 and 30 of Blow, W. (1969), in Aubry, M.-P. (1993), and in the UNOCAL collection (Buff Bay section/collectons of J.B. Saunders), composite section of C.J. Stuart (1987) [ER21 through 44, and ER 146-21 through ER 146-30]). A copy of the relevant stratigraphic schemes from Blow is included with the collection.

Additional samples from Ted Robinson
More samples collected from Edward Robinson were found at various places in the museum, though without any further information about related publications. The below listings may lead, eventually, to assignment to studies in future, as curation of the collections at NMB proceeds.
