Archive of Lukas Hottinger: Fieldbooks and notepads

Back to Collections of Lukas Hottinger

There are 21 field books of Lukas Hottinger with notes and sketches during the period from 1953 through 1997. They are numbered from # 1 trough # 21. In later years Hottinger annotated field sample numbers directly in field trip guides, that were handed out during the excursions (many of them are deposited in the micropaleo hand library alongside the files and reprints collection Lukas Hottinger).

Next to field-books information about samples is given in a series of notpads (herein numbered by capital letters from #A through . . .). Unfortunately, notepads contain only very rudimentary information, mostly without indication of any datum. However, they reflect Hottinger's itinerary during a particular sampling trip and so are helpful for curation of the samples.

Hottinger's field books and notepads contain primary information to the materials held in the collections and are helpful for curation of Hottinger's vast collections. The information given below is a rudimentary inventory of the visited locations including sample numbers and locality names where available and legible from the hand writing (ill writing and typos not excluded).

Fieldbook #16 - Kalimantan-Sulawesi (no year indicated); Mauritius 1989 and 1990; Gargano 1985; Noumea (New Caledonia) 1981.

At the beginning of this fieldbook there info including foraminiferal determinations from a sampling area in the Makassar street between Kalimantan and Sulawesi (with a sketch). Except the notion of ORSTOM (IFREMER/Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer) neither a year nor a link to a particular study is given, but this material may refer to studies of Hottinger about coral reefs and the formation of carbonate platforms. Possibly the material is in context with publications of Hottinger (1981), Uni Nova, pp. 22-23; or Hottinger, 1989; but almost certainly it is related to the biogeographic study of Langer and Hottinger (2000). In that latter publication there is a mention of "Orstom corridor 2". The indicated samples were obviously surface samples from sediment cores as indicated water depth range between 13m to 2400m.

Sample numbers include COB 202 (21m); COB 204 (49m); COB 207 (150m); COB 210 (338m); COB 213 (488m); COB 219 (2300m); COB 223 (2400m); COB 235 (650m); COB 236 (1730m); COB 238 (20m); COB 244 (970m); COB 247 (520m); COB 248 (170m); COB 251 (65m); COB 252 (35m); COB 253 (17m), COB 255 (13m); COB 256 (24m); COB 261 (60m); COB 263 (80m); COB 266 (95m); COB 268 (200m); COB 275 (530m); COB 278 (980m); COB 282 (1500m); COB 288 (1980m); COB 289 (2200m, "below CCD ?").
