• A History of Trinidad Oil by G.E. Higgins (1996).

[Ex Box 1 in K3 Wandregal] 3 archive boxes containing manuscript texts and appendices to the book of Higginns, G.E. (1996). A History of Trinidad Oil. Trinidad Express Newspapers Limited, 35-37 Independence Square, Port of Spain, Trinidad, W.I., 498 p.). Included is correspondence of J.B. Saunders on the topic with many former oil geologists from Texaco and the Institute of Petroleum (London).

Archive box 3 contains supplemental documents, i.e.,

• There are 13 original fieldbooks of John Saunders (mostly Trinidad and Barbados, numbered from 1-10, and deposited in the geological archive of the NMB (these were obtained with shipment from 23 novembere 2018, legacy of John Saunders). From Field Books # 6, 7 and 8 of John Saunders there are annotated xerox copied extracts) from Trinidad (#6), Barbados [Bath Cliff samples (BC), Gays Cove samples (GC), and some NU samples], St. Thomas, St. Croix, Trinidad, Grenada (#7 and #8), Standort xeroxes.

• Trinidad photo archive. (Ex Box 3 [Ex Bureau John B. Saunders] ). Standort1. A folder containing a collection of black-and white photo prints from various outcrops in Trinidad, some referenced to JS sample numbers, and some are referenced to in J.B. Saunder's field-books (see above). Several photo-series show active mud-volcanism in Trinidad, see also the publication of Higgins, G.E. and Saunders, J.B. (1967), Report on 1964 Chatham Mud Island, Erin Bay, Trinidad, West Indies, and Higgins, G.E. and Saunders, J.B. (1974). Mud volcanoes-their nature and origin. Verhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft von Basel, 84(1):1-520. Photos are dated from 1956 through 1967. A list with informations from back-side of the photo's is included. This collection is of great use for historical reasons because it documents the geological exploration of the underground of Trinidad in the fifties and sixties. There exists an extended geological photo collection about Trinidad from Hans Kugler, whith whom John Saunders undertook field work. List of photo-series.

  With the John Saunders legacy shipment from 23 novembere 2018 an extended set of printed black & white fotographs and a large number of color diapositives arrived NMB showing a wide range of sujets including outcrop photographs during geological excursions, aerial fotographs, birds and plants, historical fotographs, but also fotos from Hans G. Kugler and other friends & collaborators of John Saunders while living in Trinidad during the 1950-1960ies. They add great value to the documentation of the history of industrial petroleum exploration in Trinidad and the Caribbean islands during those times.

   

  Historical Photos of Trinidad Standort2 (metal-cabinet).

  Collection of foto prints showing work at early oil wells (around 1910) in Guayaguayare, at Brighton, and elsewhere in Trinidad. Some of them may show oil pioneers Randolph Rust and Lee Lum at ? well#1 in Guayaguayare (compare with portrays illustrated in Henry, J.D., 1910). Oil Fields of the Empire. Trinidad and Newfoundland.   Yet other fotos show the beach bungalow in Guayaguayare where Hans G. Kugler and A. Tobler lived in during their early exploration visits in Trinidad in 1913 -1914 (e.g., foto No. 4007). A copy of the letter from G.E. Higgins to H.G. Kugler dated from 29 March 1969 gives explanations to some of the fotos and is alongside with the foto prints (original letter deposited in Kugler Archive, Box No. 64: Correspondence G.E. Higgins).
