Archives to the geological, paleontological and micropaleontological collections of the NMB

The documentation of the geological, paleontological, and micropaleontological collections are scattered at various places in the NMB. Some documentation (publications, documents if not too voluminous, card files, photographs) is deposited directly with the collections, or at various places in K3 (side wall cabinets, book shelves, micropaleontological hand library). However, much documents, particularly from the older collections (prior to 1950) are deposited in the room of the geological archive of the NMB. This archive holds mainly unpublished reports, correspondence of museum staff with researchers and collectors, field books, diaries, card-file catalogues, reports to funding agencies, and maps & sections showing sampling localities.

Since 2022 a selection of these maps is being registered in the Swiss library system of universities (Swisscovery) under https://basel.swisscovery.org (login with your swisscovery credentials, enter geological maps, check NMB on right side and apply filter).

Next to these more general archives there exist specialized archives to selected large and important collections of the NMB. These include the voluminous archives of H.G. Kugler, R.F. Rutsch, A. Senn, and JB. Saunders, and others.
